Philippines: Battle of Marawi

(Marawi) The Battle of Marawi  was a five-month-long armed conflict in the city Marawi, that started on 23 May 2017, and ended 23 Oct 2017 .The battle was between Philippine security forces and terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State  who captured the city after a failed attempt by the police to capture a terrorist leader.

The ensuring siege and battle saw  approx. 6000 troops facing off against 1000 terrorists, with 163 soldiers killed for 973 terrorists and 11 captured. Approx 1.1 million people were displaced and the city was knocked back into the stoneage. The following video clips shows the house by house clearing carried out by the Troops and the utter devastation of the city. (Note some scenes are disturbing)



The city has been left in ruins and it's unclear when its citizens will be able to return home. estimates suggest that it will cost around $1.1bn to rebuild the city, a task that could take years. The government is working on a peace deal that will give the predominantly Muslim region more autonomy.
